Western Art Lecture

  • Plug & Play Tech Center Sunnyvale, CA (map)

Join Kim Beil (Brown ’02, Comparative Literature; UC Irvine PhD ’12, Visual Studies) in a lively exploration of Western art and visual culture through the lens of portraiture. Inspired by the Oxford Dictionaries’ official inclusion of the term “selfie” in 2013, we will reflect on representations of the self from the 17th century until today, with an interest in dispelling the notion that ours is an age marked by unusual narcissism. Situated within this longer historical context, the lecture will consider the possibility that this popular mode of self-representation reveals deep desire for communion with the past as much as with contemporary social networks.

Dr. Beil teaches courses on modern and contemporary art, with an emphasis on photography, at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in the History of Art and Visual Culture Department.
